Give Yourself Time
One of the hardest things about fitting creative work into a schedule that has other demands is finding the time to sit down to do the work.
If you can only fit in one session a week, then that’s what you have to work with. And there’s no need to feel guilty about this.
Yet the more sessions you give yourself, the more flexibility you gain with what you get to work on.
The other part of this is figuring out the right length of time for a session.
20 minutes is great to get the ball rolling, but you don’t have a lot of flexibility to make mistakes and try new things.
Cal Newport is famous for his take on Deep Work, which is a suggestion of working anywhere between 1-4 hours of uninterrupted focus time on a given project.
Yet in order to get into a session that long, you probably have to start with shorter work bursts to just get into the habit of switching off your job and family commitments and just sit and play around.
On the topic of Deep Work, The Project Lab is a great way to sit down and move the needle on your Most Creative Work every week.
The next pod starts on Tuesday, so write back or find the link in the footer of this email if you’re interested.
