On Mondays I like to think about the idea of reaching out to people and making new connections. I don’t always do it, but that’s where my mind is at.
Because later in the week it doesn’t work so well. Near the end of the week, you can only plan for the start of the following week as people get ready to shut down for the weekend.
I spent a large part of my life living with the fear of reaching out to people. I worried what they would think of me. I felt icky.
And then I realized that you will feel icky if you reach out to the wrong people.
So let’s go up a level: Creative work is the search for interesting projects.
You can be creative in boring business settings, as long as you’re working on projects that interest you, and you have something to bring to the table.
Now let’s go down a level: Only reach out to people that you think you can help.
You must believe in your ability to help this person, their company or their publishing house.
Get that conviction in you like a Sunday morning preacher on TV. Because it comes from a place of truth.
The only thing that’s stopping yourself from making the right connections is you.
Actionable item: Make a list of ten people that you can help, and muster up the courage to say hi to them and see what they’re working on these days.
