The Narrow Road
The only resource we have to work with after inspiration is focus.
Distractions pull us away from our Most Creative Work and take us down rabbit holes.
It’s very hard to recover from distractions. That’s why I work hard every day to avoid letting them in until as late as possible.
If I watch a bit of CNN while I’m eating my dinner it’s no big deal. But reading Google News in the middle of the day is just an outlet for my creative anxiety.
Name It
The phrase for this is giving in to feel good. You know there is very little benefit to going to that website right now, but you give in to your temptation.
Think of focus as a narrow path that you have to walk down. If you walk through the grass on the side, as tempting as it is, you might get bitten by a snake.
Eventually you have to veer off the path. No one can maintain perfect focus all day.
But think about how you can stay on the path for as long as you can, as early in the day as possible.
Quick Tip
Find a dark bag, pouch or box that your can phone can fit into.
Now put that thing in a drawer.
You would be surprised how well this works.
