Unlocking a Great Creative Session
Use a "Paint by Numbers" approach to get things rolling
Creatives are often in denial that there is a system for getting their work done.
Yet if you look closely at your methods, you will see that there is a system in place, even if it changes from time to time.
Another way to think of a system in this context is a template or blueprint for getting started.
Here are some templates across different art forms:
Music: AABA songwriting format, techno build/drop
Writing: Hero → Conflict → Transformation → Resolution
Video: Rough cut → sound → color → graphics → mixdown.
The key to making this useful is:
1. Identify one or two templates that you work with
2. Set a time block in your calendar for this activity (music production, screenplay writing)
3. When the time comes to start, don’t try to be creative. Load up your template and start to “paint by numbers”.
Creative blocks usually aren’t about ideas - they’re about flow.
If you want to design systems that keep your creativity moving, I offer 1:1 Creative Systems Sessions.
