You Do You
Creative Work is a Meditation
Being original is incredibly hard online. You have tons of voices chirping at you no matter where you go.
To write this email I went from LinkedIn into Substack, and along the way a lot of stuff came up and I almost lost my train of thought for this note.
The main thing I want to say is you do you. If you aren’t where you want to be in life, that’s fine, let’s look at where you ARE and settle into that space.
Just like every smoothy or stir fry that you prepare, you are a distinct blend of experiences and insights gathered up from years of being here.
Keep hunkering down to shine a flashlight on this unique blend.
All creative work is a meditation. It’s a separation from the masses. And ironically when you find a way to separate and be yourself, you will then merge with the life force that created your physical being.
Yoga means union, it is the merger. When you go deep into your Most Creative Work, you are practicing a form of yoga taking you into source, the place from which we all emerged.
Slow it Down
I was working through a difficult passage on the guitar this week that is still not 100% down pat. Being in a hurry to get it done, I was only repeating the mistake over and over.
When you slow things down, your fingers can start to play the passage properly. And then something amazing happens. Because your mind can now see that it’s possible to do this feat, it now believes that it’s possible. And since it sees the possibility, you can now start to speed up the passage and your fingers hold it together.
Slow down your hurry to be successful by other people’s metrics, and instead start to picture living life on your terms. Picture the world that you want to create with your work. When it’s believable in your mind, you can start to act. But when you rush around doing what everyone else wants or expects, you keep making the same mistakes over and over again.
I’ve made many mistakes and failed many times, but by returning to the practice of tapping into who we are at this moment, finding that unique blend, we can all make small adjustments and start to see new outcomes.
