Increasing the Spark Radius
Come up with ideas, share them with others
When I tried using analog film for the first time as an adult, it was a frustrating experience trying to understand how the settings on the SLR camera worked.
The reason is that after every roll of film was finished, I had to take it downtown to the store for development, shell out $10-20, and then after that was done I could finally see the results of what I captured.
No wonder photographers love dSLR cameras so much. You can instantly get an idea of what happened with each photo you take. You can also take more photos to make sure you got it right.
When we work through ideas, think about the photographer
When you get only a few chances to do something, it’s quite stressful to expect a result that you’re satisfied with.
This is what the Spark Radius aims to help with.
You expand this radius by doing a combination of the following two things:
Come up with ideas
Share them with others
Then you go back to step 1 and do it over again.
Many creatives are great at coming up with ideas, but sharing them gives them a vehicle to experience a new life outside of your mind.
They say that a business doesn’t start until a sale is made, and by the same token, we could argue that an idea is a sort of belly lint until you share it with someone.
Our work as deep thinkers is to take on the things that challenge us, not the things that make us comfortable all day long1.
